  • Do I need a referral?

To determine if you need a referral, please check the front and back of your card for text stating "referral"  or "authorization" requirements to see a "specialist."

Dermatologists are considered a specialists, so if a referral or authorization is needed it may list it on your card.

Please keep in mind that sometimes this information is not listed on your card and you must call your insurance company to confirm if you need a referral.

If you show up for an appointment without a referral or authorization and your plan requires one, you may not be able to be seen.

  • Which plans might need a referral or authorizations?

Here you go! These are some plans that often require referral or authorization. Please keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list, and we suggest calling your insurance plan ahead of time to confirm if you are unsure of your plan's requirement(s).

    • Emblem HIP - always requires a referral to be seen unless the card specifically states otherwise
    • Healthcare Partners - all procedures require authorization before they are preformed
    • Oxford / United Healthcare - check the back of the card for "referral required or no referral required"
    • Aetna - check the back of the card and call your plan information line to see if your plan requires one (many student plans require authorization)
    • HealthFirst (Accepted in NYC ONLY) - must call to find out if visit/codes require authorization
  • What is my copay?

Copays are determined by your specific plan. Please check your card for copay information, or call the number on the back of your card. You'll want to check for "specialist" copay to see what it would cost to see the dermatologist. Keep in mind, you may also be subject to co-insurance, or a deductible.

  • Will I pay more than my copay?

Sometimes! If your plan has a deductible that has not yet been met, you may be required to pay more out of pocket once your insurance company processes your visit. To be sure of the potential costs to a visit, please contact your insurance company.
